All first time observers will complete a little paperwork and a small orientation before observing.  We welcome observations but also want to ensure the observer is prepared for the unique environment, how to be in the classroom, and how to minimize distractions to student learning.  To get a full picture of how children work in a Montessori classroom we ask that you observe for at least 45 minutes or wait until you have time to observe. When in the classroom conducting your observation, we will have a form that will support you in your endeavor so you get as much out of your visit as possible and calibrate your skills of observing to the strategically designed Montessori environment.

We encourage you to connect with your child's teacher to help you hone in on an optimal time.

classroom observations

We welcome families to come observe!

In a typical year, November marks the beginning of Open Observation – a key tool in the Montessori school.  Parents/Guardians are encouraged to observe in their child’s classroom periodically.  This 40 minute glimpse into the environment allows all to see what and how the children are doing and what might come next.  It also helps parents to understand their child’s life at school: friends and their relationships, what they are most interested in at the time, and how they are engaging with the environment.  Observation is open for the remainder of the year except during testing windows. If your child is new to a program, please first consult your child’s teachers to see if they are ready to have you observe in the classroom.  It takes some time for a child to acclimate to the environment and not be distracted by their families presence. Our utmost priority is around ensuring we do not disrupt the learning environment for our students.

Observations can be scheduled by emailing Office@myPCM.org - please put OBSERVATION REQUEST in the subject line.  As not to disrupt learning, we limit the number of non-PCM staff adults in the classroom, so please understand that your first date and time may not be available.  To extend flexibility, please provide your top three dates and times in your request.)
