WHAT IS A CHARTER SCHOOL?

A charter school is an independently operated public school that qualifies for state funding outside of the General Fund and cannot raise money through levies and bonds.

  They are:

  • Non religious

  • Non sectarian

  • Tuition free

  • Open to all

  • Not for profit

WHAT IS A CHARTER?

A Charter is a legally binding document which clearly establishes terms and conditions between a governing source and a body, such as a business, school or a private party.

WHAT MAKES CHARTER SCHOOLS DIFFERENT?

Since charter schools are run independently, they have greater flexibility in the way they operate. This flexibility gives them freedom to:

  • Set educational goals

  • Offer longer school day and/or school year

  • Design and implement their own standards for student behavior

  • Recruit and hire staff

  • Create their own academic plan based on the needs of their students

By having so much flexibility and liberty, charters are able to tailor their school to meet community needs and explore new educational approaches that will ensure the success of their students.
